The software to control the database is a set of programs that create, manage, protect and provide access to the database. It’s called a database management system. What does a Database Administrator do?A Database Administrator (DBA) monitors and co-ordinates database activities. They act as a guardian to the enterprise data, monitoring the security of the database. They determine the best way to organise, manage, store and dispose of data. DBA’s design reports and forms to present the information their customers need, make changes and test everything before it’s put on the shelf. They are responsible for enforcing data standards, maximum use of computer resources to ensure speed of response and overall system performance. DBA’s may be involved in the design of new databases, determining data requirements, coding, testing, installation and maintenance. When upgrading to new systems, they would be responsible for the transfer of data to the new system.
